MLT Program Referral:

An Associate of Arts Degree prepares students to become Medical Laboratory Technicians and valuable members of the Health Care Team! Starting salaries $25-$31 per hour!

 

What is an MLT?

- Medical Laboratory Technicians (MLT's) are a mid-level Associates Degree laboratory professional

- Trained to perform waived and moderately complex tests in the clinical laboratory


Where will an MLT find employment?

- Any facility participating in clinical laboratory testing: Hospital laboratories, Physician office laboratories, Reference laboratories, Veterinarian laboratories

- Research/biotech

- Sales/technical service


Prerequisites prior to addmission into any California program:

- Human Anatomy and Physiology

- Chemistry 

- Microbiology

- California Phlebotomy Certification

MLT Program Admission Process:

- Usually admission  is made in accordance with clearly defined and published practices of the institution in which the candidate is applying.  These criteria are detailed in the institutions College catalogue.

- Californaia community colleges are an open-access system.  All students who meet the minimum program requirements are accepted into the program.  In cases where MLT applicants exceed the space    available, students are accepted into the MLT program on a first come/first serve basis.  Usually students not accepted for the quarter in which they apply are placed on a waitlist for future quarters and placed by application date. Please check with the specific school you are applying to for wait list policies.

 

MLT Programs are partially funded by local hospitals that need laboratory workers.

 

Here is an example of a series of Clinical laboratory lectures and student laboratories common to all programs in California.

 

- Clinical Chemistry

- Clinical Hematology

- Clinical Coagulation

- Clinical Urinalysis

- Clinical Microbiology

- Clinical Immunology/Immunohematology

- 828 hrs additional training in local hospitals

- Program completion time = 2+ years (full-time student)


CLS Program Referral:

 An Master Level degree from a CLS program prepares students to become Clinical Laboratory Technicians and valuable members of the Health Care Team! Starting salaries $35-$50 per hour!

CLS Training Program

Clinical Laboratory Scientists are required to have a Bachelor of Arts or Science from an accredited university in Clinical Laboratory Science or a related field such as Biology or Biochemistry. Coursework taken must include the following:

- 18 Semesters units of Biology, including Hematology, Immunnology and Medical Microbiology

- 16 semester units of Chemistry, including Quantitative Analysis and Biochemistry

- 3 semester units of Physics including instruction of optics and electromagnetism

 

In California, approved training laboratories maintain a minimum of two licensed personnel for every trainee. Students train 4 days a week for 52 weeks in each area of the clinical laboratory. Minimum time spent in each department is as follows:

-Biochemistry………………………………12 weeks

-Hematology……………………………….. 8 weeks

-Pretransfusion Testing…………......……..4 weeks

-Urinalysis………………………… …….….4 weeks

-Bacteriology………………..…………..…..9 weeks

-Serology……………………………….……4 weeks

-Misc. and review………………….......……8 weeks

New MS Meets Clinical Lab Demand

Dominican University of California will launch a master’s program in Clinical Laboratory Science (CLS) with an emphasis in Molecular Diagnostics in fall 2013. The program, which will be the only CLS master’s program in California, comes at a time when demand for trained clinical laboratory scientists is growing both in California and throughout the United States.

NMU science department works to fill job openings

MARQUETTE -- Northern Michigan University's Clinical Science Department is holding workshops for high school teachers and professionals in the field.

Thursday was the first of the two workshops. The workshops address the basics of DNA and advancements made in disease diagnosis. NMU's Clinical Science Department is in elite company nationwide in terms of offering nationally-accredited programs.
